This was absolutely my favorite slam of the year. Okay, it was our only slam in 2017 so far, but can you blame me?! I really enjoy being a member of this slam team, but last night showed me that the reach of Houston VIP extends beyond the team, beyond slam, into a beautiful city full of artists who want to share their work. We had our Women of the World Slam Qualifier, and we boasted more competitors than ever. Ladies were tasked with presenting a 2 minute poem in the first round, followed up by a 1 minute poem in the second round. After an elimination, finalists finished off with a 4 minute poem in the last round. The poems were something to see, but the sisterhood and support in the building last night, was the real treat. All the ladies formed a community during that slam last night, hugging each other after getting off stage, whispering words of encouragement and just enjoying each other as poets. Our loyal fans followed us to Caddyshack on Washington to enjoy food, drink and a memorable show. When it was all said and done, Loyce Gayo was crowned champion and will be advancing to the Women of the World Competition later this year in Dallas, Texas. As a female poet, I appreciated the energy last night. As a VIP team member, I am proud. I hope to see you all at our regular monthly slam on January 28th for more excellence.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
