It was yet another intense, emotional, heartwarming, packed-house show at Houston V.I.P. Slam! And this month we were gathered to celebrate not only the poetry, but also, our V.I.P. community. We wished a very happy birthday to Desmond Jones, our social media coordinator and great friend. Houston V.I.P. would not be what it is today without Desmond’s years of selfless commitment to growing our organization. Thank you Desmond!
Before cutting the cake for him, our workshop leader, D.E.E.P., started the night off with a challenging writing prompt that encouraged all participants to think way outside of the box. It forced writers to build pieces from random, and often haphazard, metaphors. Although it might have appeared intimidating, the results that came from it were truly amazing! In just 15 minutes, many poets - some of whom were with us for the first time - were able to craft and share unique, creative, and profound lines of poetry which would certainly make the beginnings of excellent pieces.
And with many of Houston’s best poets competing in our main competition, the slam featured excellent piece after excellent piece. There were many heavy topics addressed, ranging from misogyny to racial discrimination to the death of loved ones. All were handled and performed with tact and grace in a very supportive environment. Finally, our feature, Truth B. Told, came all the way from Arizona to perform for our feature! He had a phenomenal set which touched on many of the same points made by our competing poets, but he made them with a cadence and style all his own. His work is available at http://www.truthbtold.net/.
On behalf of everyone at Houston V.I.P. thanks to all of our poets, judges, staff, and audience members for coming out. We’re looking forward to seeing you and some more of your friends on the last Saturday of October!
